The University of Arizona Honors College has designated Mandy Redig ('99) as its 2003 Outstanding Senior. According to the May 2003 edition of The Eclectic, the honors college newsletter, the award was given in recognition of "the breadth of [Mandy's] talents and the depth of her commitments."

In the course of her academic career, Mandy has worked in the UA Cancer Research Center and University Animal Care; served a summer internship at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle; studied at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland; established Books for Hope, an organization dedicated to rebuilding libraries in Afghanistan; explored medical ethics under an undergraduate research grant; and taught English to children in Poland.

"I want to be a physician who sees with the eyes of a scientist," Mandy told The Eclectic, "and a scientist who works with the soul of a physician."

Mandy's accomplishments exemplify what has been another banner year for Flinn Scholars. Among the top honors: Chris Tijerina ('01), a sophomore at Arizona State University, was awarded the Cesar E. Chaves "Si, Se Puede" award, honoring Tijerina's leadership in and contribution to his community; Jon Gandomi received the 2003 Truman Scholarship; and Brain Lutz was awarded the Marshall Scholarship.

Graduating Scholars this year have been accepted to several prestigious graduate and professional schools, including admissions to Duke, Johns Hopkins, Mayo, Northwestern, Tulane, and UCLA medical schools. Some Scholars, including Ajit Itty (Mayo, medicine), Heidi Ernst (University of Chicago, history of science), and Josh Billar (University of Texas, bioengineering) will pursue their graduate degrees under full fellowships or scholarships. Others will take up internships or employment with the National Institutes of Health (Andy Gulbis) or Lockheed Martin (Matthew Johnson).
