University of Arizona has appointed Dr. Edward Shortliffe dean of the College of Medicine-Phoenix in collaboration with Arizona State University.

A nationally renowned clinician, educator, and expert in the field of biomedical informatics, Shortliffe comes to UA from Columbia University, where he is the Rolf A. Scholdager Professor and Chair of the department of biomedical informatics at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Shortliffe, who will also serve as a member of UA's Academic Council and Health Sciences Academic Council, will assume his post after March 1.

"This is a new and key position for University of Arizona," said UA President Robert Shelton. "Dr. Shortliffe's long experience as a physician, researcher, and academic leader will be of immense value as we prepare to welcome the first class of medical students this summer to the UA College of Medicine-Phoenix, in collaboration with ASU."

As dean of the Phoenix medical campus, Shortliffe will report to Keith Joiner, dean of the UA College of Medicine and vice provost for medical affairs. Joiner has statewide oversight for College of Medicine programs.
